What’s all the stink about?!

It's official! Zoo Poo, 100% Organic Herbivore Compost, has launched in stores across the DFW metroplex. This unique partnership between Silver Creek Materials and the Dallas Zoo is based on missions of innovation, sustainability, and community partnership. In addition, a portion of each Zoo Poo purchase goes to conservation efforts worldwide.

As seen on…

in 2019…

The Dallas Zoo and Silver Creek Materials kicked off an exclusive partnership with the goal of reducing waste in local landfills and supporting conservation initiatives worldwide.

In 2021…

Silver Creek Materials took in over one million pounds of herbivore waste and manure to convert into Zoo Poo.

In 2022…

Silver Creek Materials is set to divert over two million pounds of herbivore manure from local overflowing landfills, doubling the amount of waste that is now able to be repurposed into Zoo Poo.

By 2030…

The Dallas Zoo plans to divert 90% of all waste to achieve a "Zero Waste" designation. Animal waste is, by far, the heaviest part of waste generation at the Dallas Zoo, and by taking in all herbivore waste, Silver Creek Materials is able to significantly reduce environmental stress in the North Texas community.

WHat is zoo poo?

Zoo Poo is 100% Organic Herbivore Compost, made by privately-owned Silver Creek Materials in Fort Worth from manure generated by herbivores at the Dallas Zoo, including elephants, giraffes, and hippos. Zoo Poo is rich in nutrients and an excellent source of organic matter. The animal manure, with its mixture of hay and bedding material, creates an impeccable composted blend for potted plants, growing gardens, and landscapes.

What’s the arrangement between the Dallas Zoo and Silver Creek Materials?

The partnership between these two organizations fits well with Silver Creek Materials' ongoing mission to create a full life cycle of recyclable materials that would otherwise go to a landfill and the Dallas Zoo's long-term sustainability goal.

Why buy Zoo Poo?

Zoo Poo doesn't smell like manure at all, and plants dig it! It increases microbial activity in soil, which is vital for healthy plants and strong root systems! By purchasing Zoo Poo, consumers will support sustainability initiatives, promote innovation in environmental science, and encourage community partnerships. A portion of every sale of Zoo Poo will benefit international wildlife conservation. When we think about the full life cycle of a reusable product, Zoo Poo is the perfect footprint thanks to its beneficial properties, recyclability and reusable characteristics!

What is Zoo Poo ideal for?

Zoo Poo is a premium organic compost product and can be used anywhere in your yard, garden spaces or container plants. This makes a superb top dressing for your lawn. For context, a 1 Cu. Ft. bag weighs approximately 25 pounds. See packaging for additional details.

What is composting, and how does it work?

Composting accelerates the decay of organic matter by providing conditions for organisms that eat it to flourish. The process produces soil rich in nutrients. Effective composting requires air, water, carbon and nitrogen. Greens, like grass clippings, fruit, vegetable waste and coffee grounds, are rich in nitrogen. Browns, such as leaves and tree branches, are rich in carbon. Exposure to regular watering and air, including by turning the compost pile, are critical. Animal manure has long been used in compost for agriculture. Manure also contains animal urine, high in nitrogen, and bedding, high in carbon. Composting carries numerous benefits for the environment, including diversion from landfills.
